Helmut Lang was born in 1956 in one of the most beautiful cities of Austria - Vienna. Parents of the future designer dreamed prepare the boy for a successful banking career, but their dreams were realized. Extraordinary temperament and a deep sense of individualism, which had Hellmuth, often forced him to go against others and make their own decisions.
His parents divorced when he was 6 years old. After the divorce, the future designer was sent to training grandparents in alpine Austrian village where he spent his childhood until he was 10 years old. The boy wanted to become an artist, but was forced to learn in business school, as family foundations and Catholic upbringing did not allow to fully realize their own desires.

By the end of the seventies in Lang finally formed his own idea of fashion and he decides to start his own business, taking his assistant cutters and tailors. In 1978 he created the first collection of Helmut Lang, which is dominated by African motifs. Subsequently, the designer himself admitted that he wanted to create something absolutely exceptional. He just sewed square pieces of silk and linen, cut out holes for the arms and head, and ... Everything! Hellmuth then admitted that he could not then cut.
The first boutique now known designer opened in 1986. He had such a great success that all subsequent collection of creative designer caused a storm of positive emotions among critics. Soon he was invited to participate at the Paris catwalk, but he continues to work in Vienna, arranging screenings of their collections to a narrow circle of invited friends.
In the early 90's Helmut Lang decided to move to New York. A few years later, thanks to his extraordinary temperament, he becomes the legislator not only American, but also the world of fashion. The designer was able to anticipate the new century with their laconic forms and technological fabrics. Styled asymmetric hems and raw edges, layered clothing and rubberized fabric, he stayed true to his style, did not follow the general trends of the fashion style of their rivals.
