To understand what the word "courtly", you must first define courtesy or kurtuazii (from the French word courtois, which means "knight", "polite"). It is a system of rules of conduct at the court or set of qualities, with which the court must have. In the Middle Ages it relates mainly to the rules of the treatment of women and expressed in the so-called courtly love. This medieval conception of the relationship, according to which the relationship between the lover and the knight of his lady were similar to the relationship between vassal and, accordingly, his master, to a large extent affected the whole of European culture to date. The concept of "courtly love" was first mentioned at the end of XI century in poetry of the troubadours in the court of the influential lords of Aquitaine and Provence. At the beginning of early modern concept of "courtesy" somewhat changed its meaning. Now it was the expression of the rules of politeness and courtesy to women and to men: greeting, conducting interviews, the behavior of the dance and an invitation to him, and farewell. One sign of courtesy was a possession, in their own words and deeds. Thus, the word "courtly" means "courteous", "polite".
